Exploring intergroup conflict and community-based participatory research partnerships over time

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is a growing practice by which academics and community partners conduct collaborative health-based research. While CBPR fosters productive partnerships, there increasing on interpersonal group dynamics the ways that intersecting factors, such as gender ethnicity, affect social interactions within CBPR. This paper explores tensions inherent in large interdisciplinary community-based through examination of long-standing community–academic partnership focused advancing public health. Nine qualitative interviews were conducted between November 2019 January 2020 with steering committee members from conducts to inform health action. process was generally positive, we also uncovered less pleasant aspects projects are infrequently discussed literature, role confusion power dynamics. Leadership style seen driving force shaping how other team concerns perceived. Not having structures place facilitate relationship development, or clear documentation procedures, rules norms, led complications. Team suggested renewed focus organisational structure would contribute clarity organisation. The results highlight complexity working mixed teams, specifically interdisciplinary, can be complicated, meandering process, often without clear-cut answers sometimes simple questions.
